Lessons from the Past - Famous Quotes

Posted June 7, 2010

I've always been struck by how people in the tech industry always forget lessons of the past, and always forget those little pearls of wisdom that came before. Here are a few choice ones, and my comments included.

"Measuring programming progress by lines of code is like measuring aircraft building progress by weight."
- Bill Gates

An interesting position for Mr. Gates to take, given his continual references to lines of code since Windows 95, and comparing .NET to J2EE.

"Always code as if the guy who ends up maintaining your code will be a violent psychopath who knows where you live."
- Rick Osborne

Something every Ruby fanboy should remember. I always wanted secretly harbored ill-will towards those who had worked on RoR code before me.

"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning."
- Rich Cook

Enter the average user, and every iPhone fanboy.

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe."
- Albert Einstein
