Why I Admire PHP
I finally decided today that even if I may not like PHP, I certainly admire it. It's etched out a very good business for itself, and continues to flourish, despite calls of it's demise at the hands of Ruby (much like the calls of demise of Java).
One of the things I admire about it is that it doesn't pretend to be what it's not. PHP is a dynamic HTML-generating language - end of story (sure, a few guys here and there give it a go as a control scripting language, but that's not common). It doesn't pretend to be the alpha and omega of all things programming-related, as Ruby and Python try to claim (and fail cataclysmically, I might add). It's not a monster to set up on your server, like Java can be. It's not the exclusive domain of one deranged kaaskop (cough, cough, "Benevolent" Dictator for Life). It's fairly well documented, and doesn't pretend that somehow 20 layers of code somehow magically becomes understandable simply because you converted a few keywords here and there compared to other languages.
No, PHP is what it is, and everyone's happy with it that way.
Hats off to the PHP community!
