Ubuntu 10.04 First Impressions

Posted May 14, 2010

I just completed my upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 and here's my first impressions.

Honestly - right now I don't care for the new colours. The dark-grey menus are actually surprisingly hard to read. And no, I'm not blind.

The move of the close, min, max buttons from the right to the left is uncomfortable and unfamiliar, but this is purely a "I'm used to the other way" issue more than any inherent problem with it (perhaps some MacOS X envy inspiring the move).

My only real gripe is the obsolete packages. One of my blogs centers around retro gaming, and unfortunately these packages are no longer available on Ubuntu. This is a bit of a drag, because it makes my step-by-step guide for installing useless.

All of that aside, the single biggest annoyance is the obsoleting of the Sun Java package. I cannot fathom what kind of warped logic prompted this. From all my benchmarks the OpenJDK is significantly slower than Sun's (Oracle's?) and as for the other VM's - they are quirky to the point of being unusable. Good call on that one, Canonical.

That's all to report for now. (sigh) those freakin' colours ... simply awful.
